Entry-Door Glass and Privacy Guide
Door glass is not a single finish choice. Visibility changes with daylight direction, interior lighting, viewing distance and glass treatment, while the required glass construction depends on panel size and project conditions.
Test privacy in both lighting directions
A glass that looks private in daylight may reveal more when the interior is brighter at night. Review samples from both sides and consider the entrance lighting plan.
Separate appearance from glass construction
Tint, pattern and frosting describe appearance; laminated, tempered and insulated build-ups describe construction. The project may need a combination of both groups.
Coordinate glass with frame and hardware
Glass thickness, edge support, panel weight, lock preparation and sightlines must be reviewed as one door assembly, especially for large glazed leaves.
Frequently asked questions
Is frosted glass completely private?
Not in every condition. Shapes and movement may remain visible depending on distance and lighting. A physical sample is the best way to judge the desired privacy level.
Can different glass be used in the door and sidelight?
It can be discussed, but color, reflectivity, thickness and edge appearance should be compared so the entrance still reads as one composition.
