Pivot vs. Hinged Entry Doors

Pivot and hinged doors can create equally strong entrances, but they organize weight, clear opening and hardware differently. The right starting point is the actual opening and the way the entrance will be used every day.

How the opening geometry differs

A hinged leaf rotates at the frame edge and usually preserves more of the nominal leaf width as clear passage. A pivot leaf rotates on an inset axis, leaving part of the leaf on the opposite side of that axis.

Scale, handling and daily traffic

Pivot hardware can support a broad architectural gesture, while a conventional hinge layout is familiar and efficient for many daily entrances. Door size, closing control, handle reach and the expected traffic pattern should be reviewed together.

What to confirm before choosing

Record rough opening dimensions, floor levels, desired swing, furniture-moving needs, wind exposure and access-control expectations. Final hardware and structure should follow verified dimensions and project-specific review.

Frequently asked questions

Is a pivot door always better for a large opening?

No. Pivot, hinged and double-door layouts may all be suitable. Clear opening, scale, use and site interfaces determine the better direction.

Can both types use glass and smart access?

They can be discussed for both types, but glass build-up, wiring, lock position and hardware compatibility must be reviewed for the selected system.
